Don’t be unnerved by the resume writing process. In today’s modern society, resumes are extremely important when trying to show yourself as the right candidate for the right job. Resume building may seem like a daunting task, but that’s why resume consultant experts have taken apart the following example. This auto body and fender technician resume sample demonstrates common mistakes that many resumes unfortunately make.
Format your education appropriately
Your education section is a great chance for you to shine. This does not mean including your high school diploma as relevant coursework. Even if you accomplished coursework that is related to the job at hand in high school, it is no longer time-appropriate data. WRONG: Education 2002 South Western Hanover, Pa, USA General Education High School Diploma Metal Shop 1 Wood & Plastic shop 1&2 Power technology University of Phoenix Business Associate of Arts I received 30 of the required 60 credits needed for a degree. There was a birth of my daughter and my time to focus on school, work, and a new child was to much for me. RIGHT: University of Phoenix Business Associate of Arts -Achieved 30 credits -Relevant coursework here -Relevant internships/campus engagement here Instead, focus on the higher education that you do have, if any. List the level of completion that you attained while at the institution along with relevant coursework and campus engagement. Internships that are in line with the job at hand are useful details as well.
Use bullet points
Summary sections are the only sections that can be appropriately formatted into a paragraph form. Other sections, including work experience, should utilize bullet points. WRONG: CTI Ownings Mills, MD Fire proof inspector Inspect Fireproof on new construction buildings. Mainly Johns Hopkins children’s hospital in Baltimore, Md. RIGHT: CTI Ownings Mills, MD Fire proof inspector
There should also be enough bullet points to warrant listing any information at all. When it comes to work experience entries, try to have between five and eight bullet points of relevant details and skills.
Edit your writing
The way your resume reads is almost as important as the information that it contains. Make sure that you proofread your writing and edit your work multiple times before submitting it anywhere. WRONG: I started working right out of high school. Beginning in the concrete construction field, I began as laborer before moving up to a concrete finisher and carpenter before I decided to change careers. I learn how to finish concrete, all carpentry involved, and reading blue prints and plan layouts. I left there and went to work for my cousin in his auto body repair shop. RIGHT: Experience in the concrete construction field. Began as a laborer before moving up to a concrete finisher and carpenter. Learned how to finish concrete and all the carpentry involved. Skilled at reading blueprints and plan layouts. Experience in auto body workshop following construction work. This includes cutting out irrelevant details, such as when you started working and why. Focus on skills, personality traits, and goals that you want to accomplish.
Make sure your achievements are achievements
Accomplishment sections are, for most resumes, not necessary. They should be exclusively used for quantifiable achievements, skills, and awards, such as receiving Teacher of the Year. WRONG: Accomplishments Promoted in every work place I’ve been at. Received certifications for automotive repair and refinishing. Has college credits These are not “accomplishments” in the resume sense of the word, and should be delegated to other sections of the document.
