Proofread your resume
An important step in the resume creation process that is frequently overlooked is proofreading. Once you have finished, always be sure to take a quick look over your resume to make sure no simple mistakes remain. This resume has a few typos or segments that were clearly not intended to be written as they were. Common mistakes include sentence fragments, such as this resumes am assistant for 5 year in the summary, incorrect capitalization as seen in the experience section, and inconsistent spacing and alignment. If any of these mistakes are still in your resume once you send it off to an employer, it will seriously harm your chances of getting called in for an interview. Always be sure your resume portrays you as professional and careful.
The order is important
Many writers never realize that a standard for resumes has been established. This standard includes the order of the different sections, and it is made to be beneficial both to employers that are reading resumes and to the resume writers themselves. Be sure to follow this standard closely. The best order of sections is: Summary, skill highlights, work experiences, and education. There are several optional sections that can be added to the end of the resume, as well as the option to add an achievements section before the experiences. This resume nearly gets the order correct, but the licenses information, as an optional section, should be at the end of the resume. This is technical information that is just going to bog the first half of the document down.
Make your experiences shine
The experiences section is the most important part of your resume. More so than any other, you should ensure that this section is organized, appealing at a glance, easy to read, and informational. Note that the capitalization in the experience section of this resume is incorrect and the information is disorganized and has a cluttered look. It would be more effective if it looked like this: Home Assistant 04/2013 to 05/2013 Prima Home Health Chantilly, VA
This version formats the information as a bulleted list, which is more effective, fixes the typos, and makes sure there are at least five points. Also note that each bullet point starts with a strong action verb and does not include personal pronouns.
Manage the length
It may not seem like it, but the length of your resume says a lot about you. You should always try your best to completely fill one page, but not bleed onto a second page. Eliminate wasted and blank space, either at the end of your resume or between the sections. This resume is too short. To fix this problem, some optional sections could be added, such as Accomplishments, Awards, or Affiliations. The summary section should also be at least four lines, and the changes to the experience section listed above will also improve the length.
