When youre updating your professional resume, you naturally want to avoid common mistakes and formatting errors. If you havent applied to a job in a while, youll first need to get up to speed with accepted formats and expected information. Our team of experts has reviewed this airline operations executive resume sample and provided a list of suggestions for improvement.
Format Is Everything
Many people focus intently on the information included in the resume, but they forget that this is an extremely visual document. The resume is not a detailed explanation of your professional triumphs. If the hiring manager is interested in those stories, he or she will call you for an interview. Instead, the resume is a snapshot of your professional merit and expertise and like snapshots, this document should be visually appealing. Look at the samples Professional Experience section. Even if it has excellent information, you probably dont feel like working your way through what looks like unorganized phrases. While the applicants information is actually very good, no hiring manager will be able to quickly scan over these entries and glean information. For this reason, bullets are a standard feature of the Professional Experience section. A revised entry in this are would look like: Azul Brazilian Airlines May 2008 to Current Director Operations Planning and Training Sao Paulo, Brazil
Give Enough Without Crowding Your Space
In the Work Experience Section, 5 to 8 bullets per entry is standard practice. Why? It is important to provide enough information without crowding the area. Too much information is difficult to read and takes valuable space away from other entries or sections. On the other hand, too little information wont give your hiring manager a clear idea of youre capabilities. This candidate does provide great information, but fails to give enough as most sections have 4 bullets or less. The third entry in particular is very short, and needs at least three more informative bullets. An edited version may look like: United Airlines June 1997 to April 2003 Commercial Airline Pilot Los Angeles, CA
Accomplishments Section Are for the Experienced
Any hiring manager reading this sample resume can see that this individual is very accomplished in his field. The work experience section is filled with quantifiable accomplishments like Qualified on B727 (Flight Engineer) and A320 aircraft and founding member of fastest growing airline in the world. This type of information is perfect for an Accomplishments section like so: Professional Accomplishments
