Do not mention you are interested in a new position
Many job seekers feel compelled to state in their resume summary that they are interested in obtaining a new job, including this sample resume. However, this information is not essential to include and only takes up room that would be better utilized for something else. You never want to talk about what you hope to gain from a certain job. Instead, you want to talk about the various experiences, talents and skills that you have to offer the organization you are applying for. This will make a hiring manager take notice and want to bring you in for an interview.
Work experience should come before education
This resume sample has her education listed before work experience when in actuality you would want those two sections to be swapped. Although having a degree and certain certifications can certainly come in handy, they will not be as important as the real world job experience you have obtained. You want your work history to come first, and then toward the bottom of your resume you would want to talk about any degrees and licenses that would come in handy on the job.
Begin bullet points in work experience with strong, active verbs
This resume sample does a fairly good job of ensuring that all the descriptive bullet points begin with a strong verb that grabs your attention. However, there is one bullet point that deviates from this rule:
You never want to start a point with something passive like Responsible for or Accountable for. In order to correct this, we would want to change it up, so the point goes like this:
Include metrics and quantifiable information when applicable
Your resume is your chance to really sell yourself to a potential employer, and you want to include as much relevant information as possible to set yourself apart from other job applicants. Therefore, you want to avoid writing your work experience section as though it were a job description. To avoid this, you should include detailed information that really goes into what you accomplished at each place of work. As an example, this sample resume contains the following point under her time at Baycon:
Pretty much anyone who has worked as a decontamination specialist would be able to put this, so to make yourself sound more unique, you could rework it to be more along the lines of:
Try to get five points per workplace
Your resume can be up to a page long, so you should use up as much space as you can to make your resume thoroughly detailed. Since this sample resume seems to be have some extra space to play with, it would be advisable to include more details under work history. It is suggested that each place of work has around five or six bullet points, so the writer would want to include additional achievements or duties.
