The first impression an employer has of you comes from your resume, but not just from the information you include. Checking out sample resumes is a good way to catch commonly made mistakes to give your resume the best chance at being read all the way through. Weve had our experts examine this accounting manager resume sample so that you know what to avoid.
Only list accomplishments separately if you have 3 or more
If you have accomplishments, they can go a long way in proving your potential worth to an employer, but you should always include 3 or more. This resume only lists two, so these entries should be included in the Experience section. It is also a good idea to include accomplishments that can be measured with metrics.
Write in present tense for current employment
It is good to use past tense for employment history details of jobs you no longer do. However, a position you still hold should be written in present tense, unlike this resume example. The easy fix is to change each verb to present tense. WRONG: Accounting Manager Cincinnati, OH
RIGHT: Accounting Manager Cincinnati, OH
Include sufficient employment details
Just like the Accomplishments section, each entry in Experience should have at least 3 bullet points describing the position. In two of the jobs listed, the number of details falls below. The writer would need to add more to fix the problem. WRONG: Accounting/Tax Preparer Cincinnati, OH
RIGHT: Accounting/Tax Preparer Cincinnati, OH
Use bullet points for separate duties
Each bullet point should have only one sentence. Each sentence that comes after should have its own bullet point. In the example below, the applicant has two duties as one point. She should move it down as its own for clarity. WRONG: Assistant Bookkeeper Cincinnati, OH
RIGHT: Assistant Bookkeeper Cincinnati, OH
Write your Education section with the right phrases
Coursework in higher education is always a bonus, but there is an appropriate way to list it if you dont graduate with a degree. In this resume, the writer includes how long they attended a university. This makes the resume unclear. If the degree is in progress or if coursework was completed as a non-graduate, this information needs to be mentioned. WRONG: UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI Accounting Cincinnati, OH, USA Completed two years towards B.S., Accounting RIGHT: UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI B.S. in Accounting, in progress Cincinnati, OH, USA OR Coursework in Accounting, University of Cincinnati
