In a highly competitive job market, you want to take advantage of every opportunity to improve your chances. A great but often overlooked tool is the sample resume, which allows you to write and structure your own resume using what you liked and didnt like as a basis. Weve gotten together with some experts and pointed out specific issues and fixes in an Accounting Analyst resume sample so that you have a solid starting point as you craft yours.
Make use of bullets to avoid clutter
Chances are that the people who are going to be reading your resume are going to be going through sometimes hundreds of applications for the same position. That fact alone makes it a challenge to stick out as the best candidate, which is why the last thing you want is for a hiring manager to toss your resume aside because he or she thought it was too cluttered. One of the best ways to avoid this issue is to separate bits of information about yourself and your experiences through the use of bullets. While bullets do take up space on an already brief document, it is worth the sacrifice to make life a bit easier for hiring managers. The writer of this resume made the ill-advised decision to place the information for the Accomplishments and Experience sections in large blocks of text that make things blend together. WRONG: Increased cost-awareness and compliance effectiveness through setup and implementing of automated Material Disposition process. Developed Daily Operating Report of controllable overhead spending for use in management spend decisions. Developed an Excel-based Methods’ variance forecasting tool for use in determining cost-savings forecast between production lines. Assisted in leading the BOM analysis in a mostly error-free transition to SAP. RIGHT:
Theyre skills, not highlights
If you look at the top of this sample resume, youll notice that immediately following the Summary section is another titled Highlights. Highlights should be reserved for when there have been major milestones in ones working life that might give a reading hiring manager a sense of the applicants ability to progress. Here, however, what we see is a bulleted list of skills, which is what this section ought to be called. When it comes time to hire someone, companies want to be able to quickly look at your resume and know on a fundamental and practical level whether or not you are competent enough in the field to work for them. If they glance at your resume and dont readily see any Skill section, you take the risk of them assuming a lack of relevant experience.
Make your abbreviations clear
If you have a lot of experience and accomplishments you want to share with your next prospective employer, it is natural to want to save space for them in any way you can. However, you should not do this at the risk of the reader becoming confused by certain professional jargon as the writer of this sample resume does in several instances with abbreviations like BOM, SAP, KPI and MRO. While there is certainly a chance that a companys hiring manager will know what you mean, its safer to define these abbreviations first before using them later on.
