Even if you are still a student, you may be looking for a job to help pay tuition or just to have a little extra spending money. If you are trying to get a new job, especially if it is the first job you will ever have, then it can be hugely beneficial to read through an AA degree student resume sample to get ideas for what to put on your own. Our experts examined one of these resumes, and they have some things to say about it.
Remove third person pronouns from summary
As you can see on this sample resumes summary, the sentences begin with I or Im. On a resume, you do not need these kinds of pronouns, so you can simply remove them to get to the real meat of the statement. Doing that to this sample would make the summary go like this: Student at Greenriver Community College, currently working on an AA degree. Self-employed babysitter/house cleaner for many years off and on. Experienced in warehouse duties like stocking shelves and bagging produce. Volunteer at the Bishop’s Storehouse in Kent. Great with people especially children and take great pride in accomplishing goals. This summary is so much more concise and will help save space on your resume.
Always include an end date for employment
A hiring manager is going to want to know how much experience you really have in the work force, so you should always include the dates of employment for every place of work. That includes both a start date and an end date. On this resume sample, she started as a self-employed babysitter in June 2009, but no other date is given. We have no idea if she is still working as a babysitter or if she stopped doing that a while ago. Never leave a potential employer guessing and make everything as clear as possible.
Always start with whatever is most recent in work history
For this sample resume, this rule is largely dependent on whether or not she is still working as a babysitter or if she quit doing that to become a delivery driver at Papa Johns. However, it is always good to remember that you need to start a section with whatever is most recent and work your way backwards chronologically from there. This same rule applies to your education section if you have more than one school listed.
Use bullet points to format work history section
Employers do not want to see information under work history presented as one long list. Although a paragraph is recommended for the summary, hiring managers want to see bulleted lists under your experience. Therefore, if we were to reformat the material given for her time at Papa Johns, it would look like this:
Use as much quantifiable information as you can
Take a look at the above list. It is very bland and reads more like a general job description. Plenty of people are probably applying to this new job with the same kinds of experiences, so in order to make yourself stand out, you should supplement each point with specific details. It could make the list go like this:
