Hard skills will be listed in four sections of the job description: job summary, job responsibilities, required qualifications and preferred qualifications. You won't see the term "hard skills'' anywhere in the job ad, yet every ad has them. Hard skills are the technical abilities demanded in a given career field, and they are essential to advancement.
You may find some skills in the job summary, which is a brief overview of what the job entails. Look out for keywords that tie into your existing strengths and skills. Second, the job responsibilities section takes a deeper dive into what's needed for the position. Each responsibility requires at least one skill, and some of those will be hard skills.
Finally, the qualifications section is a list of training and skills the employer wants you to have. Here, your education, certification and training are the evidence that underpins your hard skill set. Keep in mind, the required qualifications are just that — required, whereas the preferred qualifications are more flexible. In both cases, you may see certain software programs, coding languages and other skills you're already fluent in.
