When your application is being processed, your qualifications are being checked against those outlined in the job posting. If you appear to be a good fit, then you may be contacted for a phone interview, along with others who have met the job's criteria. Then, those who appear to be the best fit will be called in for an in-person interview, sometimes with a hiring manager and sometimes with a panel of managers.
Still, the process isn't over – you may be asked to take a drug test or an aptitude skills test to verify you're fit for the position. A job offer may come within a few days or weeks, depending on the complexity of the hiring process and the number of candidates being considered. If you are not selected, you may get an email telling you that the position has been "closed."
