Older, more hierarchical organizations are likely to have some remnant of career paths, with opportunities to advance one’s career within the organization. The public sector, along with large companies in more conservative industries, such as law, banking, or energy, still reward employees with growth opportunities within the organization. Lateral movements within each of these are common and can represent growth opportunities in themselves.
But for most employment situations, loyalty is neither expected nor necessarily rewarded by either party, which is why experts advise employees always to be in job-seeking mode. If you decide to stay with a company, make sure its short-to-medium-term growth prospects are high, and you have a lot of visibility and ownership over key functions, ideally ones you have been instrumental in developing. Even then, keep your resume and LinkedIn profile updated.
