You should absolutely avoid looking unkempt! This seems like a no-brainer, but I have had to counsel people on their manner of dress and the state of their hair. You should absolutely avoid coming across as a job beggar. You have valuable skills and experience — that is why the company is talking to you. Talk about your skills and experience in a professional, articulate and calm manner.
You should avoid allowing the interview to be skewed in favor of the employer. That is, you are interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you. They don’t hold all the cards. And it goes without saying that you should avoid personal or inflammatory discussion topics, such as religion or politics.
