Perks are different than benefits. Benefits are non-wage compensation, such as healthcare or adoption benefits. Without them, employees would have to pay all those costs out-of-pocket. On the other hand, perks are something that is nice to have – such as the ability to work from home or be reimbursed for commuting expenses.
Some emerging trends in perks include "pawternity," which is time off to deal with a new furry member of the family or coverage for fertility treatments or egg-freezing. Other perks in the future are expected to focus on employee well-being, such as providing nap rooms or spa services. Tech companies often lead the way when it comes to perks, such as Ping Identity, which offers unlimited vacation, and Discover Financial Services which offers an onsite gym and tuition reimbursement.
