Buying into the hype then later having expectations dashed is a well-beaten path to all kinds of dark places. You may find yourself chasing shiny objects rather than building a career, pursuing specialties that become obsolete or opportunities that end up only in burnout. You also run a big risk of joining organizations that give you little control over your work, or are run by a few insiders just trying to cash in on the efforts of worker bees like you.
You may be required to work on a project or in an organization that seriously conflicts with your value system. Everyone needs to search their souls and resolve this dilemma to their own satisfaction. It is no different from the decision many laboratory scientists have faced in doing work whose ultimate purpose is to produce weapons.
Finally, beware of the pervasive winner take all mentality. Even your closest colleagues may do anything and everything to be regarded as a leader in the field, including stealing, sabotaging, or taking credit for your work.
