Remember that computer science is a field of study, not a job. Computer science jobs can involve software development, systems administration, systems implementation, cybersecurity, and management. The work environment can range from casual to somewhat formal, depending on how conservative the organization or industry is.
Yet no matter how casual the work atmosphere, high performance is always expected, often under aggressive deadlines. Good coders are rare, and do the work of at least a dozen average coders. Getting recognized as a good coder therefore brings great respect, along with rapid career advancement and compensation to match. Even the most casual and collaborative work environments will also be fiercely competitive.
Computer science jobs are abundant in both the private and public sector. Public sector jobs are likely to be less stressful and have regular hours, but may require rigorous background checks. Private sector computer science jobs may provide more remote or flexwork options, but will usually require more "on" time.
