- Writing is a technical skill, first and last.
- Writing is hard work, and even harder to do well consistently.
- Like most careers, only a few writers ever become rich and famous, but . . .
- Every writer finds an audience, even though they may never know who is really reading their work or have any interaction with their readers.
Most of your writing will get done under a lot of constraints, and according to directions from someone with whom you will disagree on a lot of things. That’s okay – good writers thrive on that kind of discipline. Anyone who needs creative inspiration to get started writing is going to be waiting around a very long time.
Every writer is a mercenary. Ideas have to pay for themselves unless you can convince someone else to pay for them.
Your life is going to be one of constantly reading and writing things that never again see the light of day. That’s how you become a good writer, and have a career that you can do full-time, part-time, or freelance, and well into your retirement years.
