Specifically, an applicant tracking system (ATS) is software designed to eliminate applicants who don't meet certain requirements, such as a high school or college degree. With low unemployment, some employers are relaxing their requirements for certain degrees or education and are instead offering on-the-job training or eliminating some criteria in order to make the hire.
"If a company requires a degree, two rounds of interviews and a test for hard skills, candidates can go down the street to another employer who will make them an offer that day," says Amy Glaser, senior vice president of Adecco Group. If you lack the education or degree, use your resume to highlight the transferrable skills you may have, such as customer service, marketing skills gained through volunteer work, or experience at a coding boot camp. Many job requirements were inflated during the recession, so employers now are more willing to work with candidates to find the right fit.
