Hard skills, like software proficiency, or expertise in machinery operation, are of course important. But employers are increasingly placing almost as much importance on soft skills. Make sure you have a firm grasp on the most sought-after hard and soft skills for your particular industry.
Let's go back to the job description, and how you can use it as a guide for figuring out which skills to put on your resume. Print out the job ad (if you can), and highlight the skills in the job description that are also in your arsenal. Then, be sure you mention those skills in your resume. Use the exact language in the job description to describe your skills.
You can also use LinkedIn to identify the relevant skills to include on your resume. If you are able to find the job you're interested in on LinkedIn.com, look at the job description. LinkedIn will compare the necessary skills to your LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn will share with you which skills you need to fulfill the job requirements, and which skills you are lacking.
Another great spot to scope out relevant skills for your resume is on LinkedIn profiles of your peers. Looking at the LinkedIn profile of someone else who does the work you do can give you many ideas for relevant skills to include on your resume.
