Typical duties for an accountant include examining financial statements to ensure accuracy; computing taxes and preparing necessary forms; inspecting accounting books; making recommendations for best practices to management; and suggesting ways to cut costs and boost efficiency. All of these activities are accompanied by written records that document and explain an accountant's recommendations or activities.
There are also different arenas for accountants, such as being a public accountant who serves corporations, governments, and individuals. Management accountants are geared toward helping organizations plan the cost of doing business and work internally with companies (instead of with the public). Most accountants work full time, but some may work more than forty hours a week, especially during tax preparation season. Key capabilities sought by employers looking for accountants include excellent analytical skills, communication skills, organizational skills, attention to detail and superior math skills.
