In many cases, it is not hard to figure out whom to address: job listings often provide the name of the contact person. However, when a posting omits this information, you need to find a way to address a cover letter without a name.
Resume professionals emphasize the importance of personalizing you cover letter. Therefore, even if you do not see a name in the listing, do not give up at this point. Try doing some research to figure out who will be reading your application materials; you may check the company's website and other resources to learn who is in charge of HR.
If you really cannot locate a name to put on your cover letter, you should still avoid addressing it to "Sir or Madam." This outdated salutation offers more drawbacks than benefits. Instead, address your letter to the job title of the person likely to read it.
