There are two aspects that the answer to this question hinge on: the employer and your focus. Every company is different, so it can be difficult to predict what roles you would fill as a GET. Generally, however, you can expect a certain role depending on the size of the company. If it is especially small, they may have graduate engineer trainees working in an unrelated field. For instance, many small companies may have a GET working in finance or human resources. This allows you to understand the company's processes better, but it may not advance your career.
Larger company most likely will have a GET fill a role they trained for. This is where the second aspect comes in.
