A resume should have more customization. On your LinkedIn page, you will have an expansive list of all your skills and work experiences. While this provides a nice overview of you as an employee, it is possible not every piece of information will be advantageous for each particular job opening.
When applying for jobs, you are still better off sending in a resume. One thing many candidates have begun doing is include a link to their LinkedIn profile within the contact information on the resume. This allows hiring managers to find more information on the applicant if necessary. Recruiters prefer both LinkedIn profiles and resumes, so make sure to update both often even when you are not actively on the job hunt.
