The important thing to remember is that you don’t earn a promotion simply by working hard. Your boss also is working hard and likely to not fully appreciate what you contribute unless you make sure he or she knows about it! That happens by showing proof of how your work makes a difference and your efforts help the company be successful. At the same time, it’s often who you know that can really boost your chances of a promotion, which is why you always want to work on developing contacts both inside and outside your department. In addition, having a mentor can help you navigate office politics or offer advice on how to take the right career steps. Finally, don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Companies are always in need of leaders with diverse skills, a willingness to embrace new ideas, and who push themselves to constantly learn.
