The main reason to send an apology letter if you miss an interview is to save your ability to earn another interview. If you miss the interview and fail to send a letter, the employer may not be willing to continue reviewing your qualifications and may disqualify you from the application process altogether.
After you send the apology letter, which should state the reason for why you didn't show as well as a genuine apology, you may be able to salvage the situation and ask to schedule another interview. Keep in mind that simply forgetting about the interview or sleeping through your alarm are not acceptable excuses. Rather, circumstances out of your control, like a car accident or family emergency, may warrant your absence and preserve your chances for landing the open position.
