There is no doubt that the very best way to find a job is to apply to specific and targeted job openings. Hiring managers expect applications to come in and will spend a great deal of time carefully reviewing resumes. That does not mean it is impossible to land a job by sending an application to a company that isn't advertising openings. We just recommend that you do not hold your breath. If they are not advertising, the chances that they would invest in a new employee are low. Additionally, do not rely exclusively on these blind applications.
Finally, reading the job description for a particular opening allows you to tailor your resume for the hiring manager's exact expectations. This is an advantage you lose if there is no advertised opening.
