More than anything, they’re looking for smart people. Show your smarts in your cover letter with concrete discussions of your achievements in sustainability and clean energy; this matters whether your role is in design or in automotive engineering. Don’t be afraid to bring up some of your ideas that you’d love to bring to Tesla, but don’t go overboard. Keep it short, with snappy language that demonstrates intelligence while still being conversational and avoiding overblown verbiage.
Remember that Tesla is a massive corporation, and hiring managers in all departments have little time to read cover letters. Don’t let yours bleed over one printed page, or approximately 250 to 300 words. Get right to the point, make your case for the value you can bring to the company, spotlight a few innovations, and end with a polite closing and invitation to contact you.

You’d write a good cover letter for Tesla by doing three things:
1. Illustrating that you are exceptional
2. Expanding on your resume with specific examples of your accomplishments
3. Showing that you can apply your talents to a vision of solving some of humanity’s biggest and most pressing problems
Tesla’s number one preoccupation is being at the forefront of the next big thing, particularly involving sustainability and clean energy. Right now, the big thing is electric vehicles, as Tesla’s market capitalization will attest. But what will be the next big thing?
Whatever it turns out to be, Tesla wants exceptional people who can think big and holistically about changing the world for the better. They want people capable of determining and executing on that next big thing, rather than sitting back and waiting for someone to tell them what to do.
Keep your cover letter brief, crisp, and incisive. Discuss one or two major accomplishments, and even a few ideas you could bring to Tesla. Understand that Tesla’s hiring managers tend to be extremely busy and oftentimes jaded. Get straight to the point, and keep your cover letter conversational, vibrant, and focused on the value you can bring to Tesla.
