The most important tip is to include information specific to the job for which you are applying. If you want to work in sales, mention your biggest achievement in the field. If you hope to join the People Operations team, your cover letter should show off your friendly personality. Avoid gimmicks, but don't be afraid to let your personality shine through, either.
Google is at the top of the tech food chain, which means the company looks for strong people to add to that chain. Be confident and show that you know something about the company other than what you can find on the first page of its own search results when writing a cover letter for Google. Use succinct sentences and active voice. Enthusiasm and professionalism will go far but be sure to keep the entire letter to about one page.

A former Google recruiter says some of the things that can get your resume eliminated include lying, typos, a cluttered format, and excessive length. That means the same is true for cover letters, which need to be truthful and crafted to show how your skills and abilities are of benefit to Google. Be specific and concise. Cover letters to Google need to include a personalized greeting (whenever possible, try to use a specific name); an engaging opening paragraph (what you have to offer Google that’s so special); a paragraph that makes a connection between your qualifications and the job requirements; and examples of your accomplishments.
One person who got an interview with Google says that she created an application cover letter that used descriptive words of her personality and things she liked, such as "Butterfingers," "Harry Potter," "million-dollar ideas" and "rock climbing." She also included: "I dream big and know Google supports big dreams. Motivated dreamers make things happen. I can help make things happen at Google."
