LiveCareer Announces the Most Competitive Job Markets in America

Job Seekers Need to Focus on Standing Out in These Industries

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sep. 2, 2014  A recent study conducted by LiveCareer—America's #1 Resume Builder and a leading online career destination—analyzed their entire resume database for the first half of 2014 to determine the most in-demand job fields. The data revealed that Customer Service-Retail, Healthcare-Nursing, Restaurant and Food Services, and Office Management-Administrative are the most competitive job categories in the United States.

While LiveCareer’s study included over 50 industries, the four leading job categories accounted for more than 66 percent of all resumes created in 2014.

  • Customer Service-Retail (28.51 percent of all resumes created): The most popular job titles in this industry include Customer Service Representative, Retail Sales Associate and Cashier.
  • Healthcare-Nursing (17.76 percent of all resumes created): Nursing—both Registered Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants—and Home Health Aides represent the most sought after positions in the Healthcare-Nursing industry.
  • Restaurant and Food Service (10.25 percent of all resumes created): Fast Food Workers, Waiters, Servers and Bartenders lead the positions being applied for in this sector.
  • Office Management-Admin (10.12 percent of all resumes created): The most popular job titles in this job category include administrative assistants, office managers and receptionists.

Because of the increased competition, savvy job seekers looking for work in these industries—and others—will need to stand out from the crowd in order to land the position, advises LiveCareer. A professional resume and cover are essential; but those looking to rise above the competition will need to go further.

“Personalization is everything when it comes to resume writing. Every word should target not just the job and industry, but the specific employer as well,” says Laura Keresty, Director of Resume Writing at LiveCareer. “For job seekers in these competitive fields, personalization is more important than ever.”
