What Do Statisticians Do?
Statisticians play a very important role in society today. Responsible for assessing and developing methods for analyzing sets of data, statisticians are trained to create usable information out of existing raw data. There are many different fields of statistics that exist, such as survey statistics, mathematical statistics, biostatistics, and agricultural statistics, and statisticians can choose which one they would like to specialize in.
Statisticians Skills and Abilities
As a statistician, you must have an extensive knowledge of many different fields. For example, you must have a strong mathematical knowledge base and have knowledge of various forms of technology, including circuit boards, processors, chips, and other electronic equipment. Additionally, you must be familiar with standard business management practices. As far as skills are concerned, you must be highly skilled with different mathematical principles and be able to critically think while you are on the job. You must also have exceptional reading comprehension, active listening, and active learning skills. Additionally, it is helpful to know how to reason in a mathematical manner, understand how to apply inductive and deductive reasoning to different situations, and perform basic equations in a rapid manner.
There are many duties you will be responsible for on a daily basis as a statistician. These could include some of the following:
- Analyze sets of data and come up with predictions based on the information, or make informed decisions based on trends in the data
- Collaborate with physicians, life scientists, and other professionals to develop research studies
- After performing statistical analyses, report your findings to others using interpretable graphs, charts, and explanations
- Use various statistical methods to solve problems related to biology, engineering, or economics
- Check for inaccuracies in sets of data and prepare it for presentation to others
- Determine which data collection methods will be most effective when working on a study or another type of projectIn your role as a statistician, you may also evaluate varying statistical procedures to determine how effective they are, use computers to process extensive amounts of data for analysis, and evaluate the sources from which data comes from to determine how reliable they are.
Statisticians Tools and Technology
Working in a scientific field, you will likely use many electronic tools on a daily basis as a statistician to perform your duties. These may include various types of computers. In addition to this technology, you will likely use a variety of software programs to collect and analyze data, such as analytical software, development environment software, data mining software, and database user interface software.
Education and Training for Statisticians
To work as a statistician, you will need to enroll in several years of formal education. For most positions, statisticians are required to have a master’s degree in a related field. Although becoming a statistician does require several years of higher education, once you have this education, you will likely not need to have any prior work experience to obtain an entry level position. Additionally, you will likely not need much on-the-job training.
As a statistician, you can expect to earn a respectable salary. For example, in the U.S., the bottom 10 percent of statisticians make an average of $43,000 a year. Comparatively, the top 90 percent of statisticians earn an annual salary of approximately $129,000.
Statisticians Jobs by Geography
There are job openings for statisticians throughout the U.S. However, more positions are available in certain states than in others. For instance, Utah, California, and Kansas are expected to have the most job openings become available for statisticians. Comparatively, in terms of job growth, Maryland, Alaska, and Indiana are expected to experience the least amount of growth.
