First and foremost, electronics engineering technicians need to have an orientation toward engineering, technology, and electronics. They need knowledge of circuits, processors, and other electrical devices, as well as the practical application of technology. In addition to experience in these fields, it is important that these technicians are designers. They need to have critical thinking, forethought, problem solving, and accuracy in order to design a system that is intuitive to use and does not create problems for other workers. Processing and mathematics skills are also invaluable to electrical technicians.

The primary responsibility for electronics engineering technicians is assembling electrical systems. They are responsible for calibration, maintenance, and repair as well. Technicians must inspect projects, collaborate with other engineers, test equipment, interpret test information, identify solutions, prepare and review modifications, evaluate proposals, plan and schedule work, and write procedures. As you can tell, the duties of an electronics engineering technician are very extensive, and the diversity is only increased by the fact that they work in many different fields.

The tools that electrical engineering technicians use for their daily operations include:
- Soldering and desoldering stations
- Electronic measuring probes
- Frequency analyzers, including radio frequency spectrum analyzers, harmonic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers
- Function generators and radio frequency signal generators
In addition to these tools, technicians use several different technologies, including analytical software, Computer aided design software, data base user interface software, and development environment software.
Education and Training for Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technicians
The education requirements for electrical engineering technicians are not very high. The vast majority of technicians that are currently working have nothing higher than an Associate’s degree. In fact, the largest group of technicians is those that have some college experience, but no degree. If combined with those that only have a high school diploma, this makes up 56% of professionals in this field. An additional 22% have an Associate’s degree and 15% have a Bachelor degree. Less than 3% have a higher degree.

Electrical engineering technicians earn a decent salary. The national average annual earnings are $60,000, but some earn as much as $90,000. The bottom 10% of technicians earn $35,000, so you should expect no less than that. It is important to remember that your location makes a big difference in pay. States such as Florida, West Virginia, and South Dakota see electrical technicians earn about $10,000 to $15,000 less annually on average. However, Alaska and Hawaii are higher than the average by about $10,000. Finally, the highest paying location for electrical engineering technicians is the District of Columbia.

There are many factors to take into consideration when considering which location to work in. Despite being one of the lowest paying states, North Dakota is seeing the highest increase in number of jobs. Texas and Rhode Island are also expected to increase the most. The field is not seeing significant changes, however. The national number of jobs is anticipated to remain about where it currently is over the next years. A handful of states, such as Massachusetts, Maine, and Minnesota have predicted employment rates to decrease by 5 to 7 percent.
