What Do Food Batchmakers Do?
Any food that is sold commercially is made in large batches before being proportioned out into smaller, sell-able sizes. As a food batchmaker, you will be the person that whips up those large batches of food products. What you make could be anything from a dry baking mix to candy to cheese. You are basically cooking and baking just on a large scale. Although, you aren’t expected to be a good cook or baker because you will be following set standards and recipes to create a product that is identical each and every time it is made.

Being able to follow set instructions and read recipes is an essential skill you must have to work in this profession because you will be required to create a consistent product so every batch is the same. It is helpful to have some background knowledge of the food production process, including where the ingredients come from and how they are used once they get to you. Food safety is also important because you will be working with food that others are eventually going to be eating, and you want to ensure you understand how to keep that food safe for consumption.
Food Batchmakers Duties
You are going to be following recipes to properly measure ingredients and mix them up in the right order. This means you need to be familiar with the ingredients you are using and the different measuring devices that you will use. You will need to make sure you have all the ingredients required and that you understand the machines that you will be working with. You may have to troubleshoot issues with the machine and the food you are creating to ensure high quality standards are met. To keep everything running smoothly, you may be required to clean and repair your machines. As you work, you will keep records and test batches for quality control. You may have checklists that you must use to ensure the product is the right consistency, size and color and that it tastes a certain way. Remember that consistency is key in making large batches of a product. If something is not right, it will be up to you to make proper adjustments to fix the issue so that the product quality remains steady and waste is minimized. You will likely have to lift large containers and move heavy boxes or containers of ingredients. Once your part of the process is complete, you may have to transport the product to the next production area.
Food Batchmakers Tools and Technology
Depending on where you work, you may use industrial mixers, presses, extruders, burners, pumps and depositors. You may also work with industrial sized refrigerators, freezers and ovens. You will most likely work with computerized gauges and controls, along with other computer equipment to run the machines and keep records.
Education and Training for Food Batchmakers
Typically, all that is required to work as a food batchmaker is a high school diploma. Most of the training you receive will be on the job. You’ll probably work with someone who will train you and teach you everything that you need to know as you work. You will also be required to attend safety training and be instructed on food safety.
