As a restaurant chef, you will have many duties. You need to know how to properly store food in the cold storage. If you don’t properly store food, you can create food-borne bacteria and make guests in the restaurant sick. You need to be able to cook anything on the menu easily. When an order is called out, you need to know exactly what you need to do, including how the restaurant wants you to plate the dish. You have to know how to properly wash, peel, and slice vegetables. You might also need to be able to bake, make pasta from scratch, and process different meats.

Another 17% have been to college, but don’t hold a degree.

The salary of a cook in a restaurant has a large range depending on the type of restaurant. You could make minimum wage at a local, hometown restaurant, but you could make six figures at a high-end restaurant. You might start out small, but you could work your way up to make some incredible money. The average hourly wage of a restaurant chef in the United States is $10.81. However, five-star chefs in New York City, Miami, and other top cities earn about $100,000 per year.
