What Do Mechanical Engineering Technicians Do?
Today, those in the engineering industry craft and develop ideas and equipment that enhance the way life is lived for the better. Generally speaking, a mechanical engineering technician uses and applies the principles of mechanical engineering to test, develop, or calibrate various machines and equipment. These technicians usually work alongside physical scientists or mechanical engineers.
Mechanical Engineering Technicians Skills and Abilities
As a mechanical engineering technician, you will need to have a solid knowledge of various mechanical principles. Some of the other skills you will need to possess include a knowledge of different science and engineering technologies that are used today. Additionally, you will need to know how different design principles apply to various engineering projects, and have a strong mathematical foundation. As far as skills are concerned, you need to know how to listen to instructions from others, and apply these directions to the project you are working on. In addition to active listening skills, it will benefit you to have strong reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. You should also be able to reason your way through problems that you might face as you complete your duties and know how to relay important information to others both orally and in written form.
Mechanical Engineering Technicians Duties
On a daily basis, there are many tasks that you will take care of as a mechanical engineering technician. For example, throughout the course of any given day, you might:
- Collect information off of different dials and meters to determine how various parts are performing within a piece of equipment
- Measure dimensions and compare them with original specifications as you evaluate tool drawings
- Take various mechanical components for a project and assemble, fabricate, or replicate them
- Coordinate with other technicians and discuss any changes in design plans with mechanical engineers
- Develop and set up tests that are designed to test different products and devices
- Go through and record the results of any tests that you completeAdditionally, you might also compile and submit reports to the engineering department, develop sketches and put together work orders, and calculate the capacities of certain pieces of equipment.
Mechanical Engineering Technicians Tools and Technology
Since being a mechanical engineering technician is highly technical, there are many types of tools and equipment you will likely use as you perform your duties. For example, you might use calipers, amplifiers, welding equipment, power grinders, and screw drivers. Some of the different types of technology you might use may include development environment software, industrial control software, analytical software, and computer aided design (CAD) software.
Education and Training for Mechanical Engineering Technicians
In order to become a mechanical engineering technician, you will need to obtain an Associate’s Degree. One of the main benefits of working as one of these technicians is that in order to get a job, you usually do not need to have any prior experience. Additionally, once you obtain a position, you will likely not need additional training.
Mechanical Engineering Technicians Salary
Although the salaries for mechanical engineering technicians vary, the bottom 10 percent of technicians earn about $33,000 on an annual basis. Comparatively, technicians who are in the top 90 percent can expect to earn as much as $79,700 every year. How much you make as an engineering technician will vary depending on where you work and how much experience you have in the field.
Mechanical Engineering Technicians Jobs by Geography
The states that employ the most mechanical engineering technicians are North Dakota, Georgia, and Colorado. In comparison, the states with the fewest open positions for mechanical engineering technicians include Maine, Virginia, and Kentucky. Once you become a mechanical engineering technician, where you live may play a role in the number of jobs that are available to you.
