Engineering Technicians Duties
As an engineering technician, your duties would also vary depending on your area of expertise. However, in general you would be expected to:
- Run experiments on equipment, computers or the like in order to diagnose and fix any issues.
- Build certain equipment to the correct specifications in order to ensure that it will run properly and be safe.
- Stay up to date on new developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with peers and attending conferences.
- Work with colleagues to develop new equipment, test old equipment and maintain the equipment you have.
- Design blueprints, diagrams, specifications or schemata.

Engineering Technicians Tools and Technology
In order to be able to do your job well, you have to know how to use certain tools and technology. Most engineering technicians will have to know how to use analytical software, computer aided design (CAD) software, database user interface software and things of that nature. These different software will allow you to make designs and keep records on the computer. You should also be familiar with any tools particular to your specialty. These tools may include:

Before you can join the world of engineering technicians, you must have an Associate’s degree. You want to make sure to take engineering related courses and courses related to your area of expertise. Whether that be biomedical technology or welding engineering technology, you have to focus on your specialty.

Like with any occupation, there are variances in salary among engineering technicians. The average engineering technician in the United States makes about $61,600. However, there are people in the lower 10% that make about $34,900. On the other hand, people in the upper 10% make about $93,300. You salary will greatly depend on where you live, who you work for and your level of education and experience.

Geography greatly affects both salary and the availability of engineering technician positions. If you live in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Washington, you are more likely to have a higher wage because the average salary in these locations is the highest in the nation. California, Texas and Virginia actually have the greatest population of engineering technicians, which may increase your chance of being able to find a job. However, North Dakota, Texas and Colorado are expected to see the biggest increase in available engineering technician positions.
