Nordstrom to open in New York City, create 1,000 retail jobs

After more than two decades of speculation, Nordstrom has confirmed that it will open a New York flagship store in Midtown Manhattan.

The Settle-based clothier confirmed the new 7-story 285,000-square-foot store at Broadway and 57th Street near Columbus Circle and Carnegie Hall is expected to create 1,000 jobs for workers with retail experience on their resumes, as well as another 5,000 construction jobs, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.We’ve had the intention and the drive, gosh, probably for the last 25 years to try to be here, Peter Nordstrom told the news agency during the press conference announcing the new [projected] location. “We fully expect this to be our most successful store.” The retailer does operate two other stores in the city – Nordstrom Rack in Union Square and Treasure and Bond in Soho, a so-called concept store that gives all its profits to charity, but this will be the first luxury item retail  operation for the company in the Big Apple.The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for retail sales workers are expected to increase by 17% through the end of the decade.
