Calling big data a sector of explosive job growth potential, MIT has rolled out its new research center at the school’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), which will focus on data collection and innovation in data processing.

In addition to the research center, a new statewide initiative with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MassTLC) and the newly created Massachusetts Big Data Consortium will create matching grant programs for storage research.

We’re already strong in mobile communications, cloud computing, robotics, and other fast-growing clusters, MassTLC president Tom Hopcroft stated. “But the big data jobs projections are staggering – the sector has the potential to be a real game changer for the region.” A report earlier this year by MassTLC predicted the sector could create as many as 50,000 new jobs for people with big data experience on their resumes in the state by 2018.The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for computer system analysts are expected to increase by 22% through the end of the decade.
