Job Action Day 2013 — November 4th — is all about empowering military personnel and veterans transitioning to civilian jobs and careers.
Job Action Day is a day for all job-seekers and workers to take stock of their situations and make plans and/or take action steps to improve their careers.
Roughly a quarter million people leave active duty military service each year — and begin making the transition to the civilian workforce. Some of these folks know exactly what they want to do next in their careers, while other have no clue — and no clue how to go about making the transition. Many struggle with understanding what employers want… and employers struggle to understand how each vet’s military service applies to the experience the employer requires for job openings.
Furthermore, a study from 2012 found that more than two-thirds (69 percent) of Veterans reported finding a job as the greatest challenge in transitioning to civilian life. In addition, 60 percent of Veterans reported that their most significant challenge is explaining how their military experience translates to skills of interest to a civilian employer. Finally, about half of veterans (46 percent) stressed about the challenge of competing with candidates who have been in the workforce longer… and almost the same number (43 percent) worried about a lack of education for specific roles in the civilian workforce. [Research conducted by Prudential Financial, Inc., with the support of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).]
The focus of Job Action Day 2013 is to provide a wide variety of advice, tools, and resources — for all types and ranks of transitioning military — to help sharpen career focus, strengthen resume development, and bolster job-hunting techniques… resulting in better job offers, and a smoother transition.
