Show that you’re motivated outside of work. Avoid saying that all you do is watch TV and eat ice cream.
I’m not one to just lounge around, so I stay pretty busy outside of work. I volunteer once a week tutoring high school students in my neighborhood. I also play on a rec league tennis team, participate in a book club, and take online classes for fun. I love learning, so I’ll take on any new hobby that helps expand my mind.
Relate your non-work activities back to the target job.
I’m on the board of a non-profit here in the city that provides services for low-income families, and that takes up a lot of my free time. I’ve mostly been doing fundraising for them. Right now, I’m looking for a position that will give me a chance to use my fundraising talents to help a non-profit grow its impact.
