Some job hunters think that trashing their previous employer is okay. You’ll often be asked what you did at your last job and why you decided to get a new position. The last thing you want to do is either complain or be negative about your last position. Instead, focus on positive answers like “I felt like it was time to move forward in my career or I was looking for something more rewarding and challenging.”
2. What can you do for me?
It’s not a bad thing to measure up what the potential employer can offer you in terms of salary and benefits. However, some job hunters focus too much on themselves. They immediately jump on the financial details of the positions or go straight into it without qualifying themselves for the job. You need to qualify yourself for the position while making sure that the position is something that meets your requirements.
3. I’m capable of doing anything.
While confidence is important, being cocky will make you come across as arrogant or ignorant. If you want show your expertise or qualification for the job, make sure you back it up with evidence. For example, “I think I’m perfect for the job because I’ve previously managed an entire tech department of company X“ would be much better than something like “I’m perfect for the job because I’m good a good leader, listener and speaker.”
4. I have no further questions about this job
Even if you’ve conducted enough research about your potential employer, you still want to ask questions about the position and company. This shows that you’re actually interested in the job while also showing the interviewer that you have standards about which job to take. Asking questions will also give you a better idea about what the position entails and whether or not you even want the job in the first place.
5. Lying about specific skills or past work experience.
The last thing you want to do is embellish your qualifications or experience. There have been cases where employees were fired on the spot or even sued for dishonesty. That’s why you want to answer everything as truthfully as possible. If you are a good candidate but you are lacking a specific skill they need, you can still get the job. Let the interviewer know that you can acquire the skill or have related experience which will allow you to pick up the required skill quickly. Remember, that you want to be in this for the long haul.
