In What Ways Do You Think You Can Contribute To Our Company?

During a job interview, there is a good chance that the hiring manager will ask you a question like, “In what ways do you think you can make a contribution to our company” or, “Why should we hire you”

This common question is probably pretty self-explanatory. The hiring manager wants to hear in your own words how you feel you can be an asset to the company. Your response will not just show what you can do but what you think the company could use. It will also show your ability to think outside the box.

Points to Emphasize

When you answer this question, you’ll want to be confident and specific about ways you can benefit the company through your position.

  • List specific contributions you feel you could make that are based on your individual character and background.

  • Show a perspective you could bring that may be unique.

  • Keep your answer positive about both yourself and the company.

  • Discuss how you can make the great company even better while showing appreciation for the established personnel.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you want to be confident about yourself while not belittling the company.

    Mistakes You Should Avoid

If you’re not prepared for this question, you could falter in your answer, which could be detrimental for your overall interview. To avoid common pitfalls, follow these guidelines:

  • Don’t express dissatisfaction with the company as it is, as it will show a lack of appreciation.

  • Avoid mentioning an entirely new direction you would take the company in, unless you feel like this is what they’re looking for.

  • Don’t limit your contributions to short term, but rather express your interest in contributing long term.

  • It’s best not to mention any contributions that would go over the authority of anyone currently employed by the company.

The hiring manager wants to make sure you have an innovative personality, so try not to make your answer too run-of-the-mill.

    Sample Answer

To get a sense of how to answer a question about contributions you would make to a company, see the following example:

I’d like to use my background in finance to help streamline the current budgetary processes. I feel that I could be an asset to the company by using my knowledge to enhance the already established system. I feel like the company is under excellent management, and I would be honored to relieve some of the burden off of them through improving how the company manages its checks and balances.

The hiring manager asks this question to see if you would fit in well with the company, and your answer can help him make his decision.
