What to Expect in a Retail Interview

Successfully preparing for your retail interview involves thinking about the skills that are helpful in the industry. An interviewer is likely to ask you questions about how well you interact directly with people. Many retail jobs involve face-to-face contact with customers; therefore, good communication skills are vital for effectively handling consumers.

Interviewers will probably ask you to share a time when you were able to positively handle a difficult situation. Not all customers are happy ones, and it may be helpful for you to share how you are able to remain positive and kind to customers because of your patient nature. Good retail associates need to hear the customers share their side of the story before responding, so be prepared to express your good listening skills to the interviewer.

Tips to Remember

Retail jobs exist across many industries. Whether you are going to be handling customers in person or on the phone, the interviewer will probably want to know that you can communicate the benefits of their products and services. Here are a couple of tips to remember prior to your interview.

· Dependability is essential in retail jobs. The interviewer will want to know that they can rely on you to make decisions and effectively resolve customers’ problems.

· Give an example of a time when you showed initiative. Going above and beyond is a desirable skill for retail employees. Let the interviewer know that you are able to see beyond specified tasks and get more done. An efficient employee is one that is often more promotable.

· Patience is especially helpful when working in retail. The interviewer may ask you to give an example of a time when you used patience during a tough situation.

General Skills to Highlight

While it may seem like a retail interview is like any other interview, it is imperative to come ready to share specific skills, such as the following:

  • Positivity – Optimism goes a long way in retail jobs. Retail often involves working with customers who are upset or unhappy. As a retail associate, you need to remain positive during stressful circumstances.
  • Assertiveness – It is important to show the interviewer that you are confident while handling problematic conditions. Convey assertiveness without coming across as aggressive or demanding.
  • Reliability – Retail positions often have a high turnaround. The interviewer will likely want to know that they can depend on you. During your interview, be prepared to demonstrate times that you were responsible.

Remember to highlight specific skills, such as communication and patience, and express your ability to use patience with customers. Confidence in your skills will help make your retail interview a success.
