Why Do You Think You Might Like To Live In The Community In Which Our Company Is Located?

The hiring manager is testing you to see how serious you are about the job opportunity and whether you would actually consider moving in order to accept the position. If you don’t have previous experience in the geographic area, you should be prepared to explain what attracted you to this region and why you would feel at home there if offered the job. Showing enthusiasm for the work throughout the interview will also help you land the position.

Points to Emphasize

For this question, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Show the hiring manager that you’ve done your research on the community. Emphasize a few attractive features of the area, such as its good schools if you have kids, or its great opportunities for outdoor activity if you have athletic inclinations.

  • Mention any ties to the community that you may have, not just family members, but friends or colleagues who could help you settle in. The hiring manager will likely think you’re a more serious candidate if you already know people there.

  • If you would be moving from an area that is dramatically different than your desired community, be prepared to alleviate any skepticism that the hiring manager may have about your ability to make the transition.

    Mistakes You Should Avoid

With every question, there are a few potential pitfalls specific to the question.

  • Don’t make generalizations about the area or its people, as you run the risk of offending someone if you haven’t done your homework.

  • Don’t come in without a plan to explain how you’ll transition into the new area.

  • Don’t badmouth your former area or job. You don’t want the employer to think that you’re trying to “escape” from something.

  • Don’t be shy to ask questions about the area, as long as they’re things that you couldn’t easily discover through a simple Google search. This will show the employer that you’re very interested in moving to the community.

    Sample Answer

Though I grew up in New York City, I’ve always appreciated the outdoors. Now that I have children, I’ve been looking to find a quieter area that would give us the opportunity to breathe fresh air every day. The fact that such a great position at XYZ company just opened up in Acme City was really exciting to me, as my wife and I have been looking at Acme as a possible new home for almost a year now.

Whatever your response, make sure you convey a genuine interest in the area in which the position is located and you’re likely to impress.
