When you head into that much anticipated, yet somewhat daunting, interview, you don’t want to feel unprepared. Figuring out how to tackle your next interview doesn’t have to be hard, however. It’s as simple as knowing your interviewing dos and don’ts.

It’s important to remember that your interviewer is just another person doing their job. They are looking for who you really are and want to see the best version of you. Knowing what you should avoid and what you should include when answering those all-important interview questions is the first step to coming out of your interview on top and landing your dream job.

Tackling the Interview Dos

When a hiring manager is looking to find the right candidate, they generally have a pretty good idea of who they are looking for. Before you go and get all nervous about trying to get them to choose you over the other potential candidates, you can ace those interviewing dos and don’ts by remembering that there are some things that you can do to get them to sway your way:

  • Always bring a professional copy of your resume and a separate list of references. This shows the interviewer that you are prepared and practiced in the business world. Bonus tip: If you want extra brownie points, consider bringing in a specialized job portfolio if you have one available.

  • Plan your route ahead of time so that you can get to the appointed spot around 10 minutes early. Showing up late for an interview is a huge no-no and sends up a lot of red flags to the hiring manager.

  • Keep your clothing conservative and appropriate for the job that you are shooting for. Making modest, professional clothing choices shows the company that you are dedicated to getting the job.

  • Research, research, research. Always look into the company that you are interviewing with beforehand. Remember that the more that you know about them, the more interested you seem.   • Make sure that you close the interview in a positive way by actually telling the interviewer that you would really like to have this job and even getting one of their business cards for your later reference.

  • Your follow-up after the interview is almost as important as the session itself. Get your thank you cards out to all that interviewed you within 24 hours for the best impression.

    Getting Rid of Those Pesky Interview Don’ts

    Now that you’ve made a list of what you should remember to do both before and during the interview, it’s time to confront the second portion of the interviewing do’s and don’ts: what not to do.

  • Don’t rely solely on your resume and application to sell your strong points to the hiring manager, that’s what your interview is for.

  • Never chew gum or fumble with another nervous tick during your session.

  • Don’t overdo it so much on the enthusiasm that you’re telling jokes right and left; maintain your composure.

  • On the other hand, don’t come off as shy and withdrawn by speaking so softly that the interviewer has a hard time hearing you.

  • Never answer a question that is asked of you with a simple “yes” or “no,” even if it seems like that’s what they’re wanting.

  • Don’t get too personal in the interview by discussing family drama or personal problems.

  • Never ask about bonuses, vacation time, retirement benefits, etc. until you’ve received an offer from the company.
