  • Arrive early. There’s nothing worse than a bad first impression. At the same time you don’t want to be too early. It’s typically recommended for you to arrive about 10 minutes early in order to be prepared and professional.

  • Bring a portfolio or notepad and a pen. It’s important to take notes for your own reference as well as to come across as engaged. It’s also a good idea to carry extra resumes in your portfolio just in case.

  • Speak clearly. Don’t be too quiet or too loud. Practice introducing yourself and answering some sample questions. Learn how to manage your tone and how to think on the spot. And don’t be afraid to take short pauses during the interview if you need to think about a question.

  • Follow-up with your interviewer. This can be done in many ways but usually involves sending a thank-you letter or email. If it’s been a few days since you’ve heard from them you can call the employer and restate your interest in the job.
