If You Were Conducting A Job Search Today, How Would You Go About It?

During an informational interviewer, you might be asked about general advice in finding a job in your field, so be prepared to answer something like: “If you were conducting a job search today, how would you go about it”

There is a very good chance that the way you would conduct a job search is the same as how others in your field would conduct one. By understanding what you look for, the interviewer will have better knowledge regarding what to emphasize in his or her resume, cover letter and job interview. When answering, you should be as thorough as possible so that the interviewer will know exactly what to expect down the line.

Points to Emphasize

Your response should be completely personalized based on what you look for during a job search.

  • Give the most detailed answer you can
  • Emphasize what is most important to you in candidates

  • Mention how many applicants you typically receive for any job vacancy

  • Mention if the process differs based on the position

    If you are high up in the organization, then you should have a good idea of how filling a position works. If you have never conducted a job search, recommend the interviewer to speak to someone who would be more knowledgeable.

  • Don’t feel the need to mention whether or not you are actually conducting a job search at this time

    The purpose of this question is for the interviewer to learn what to focus on in his or her application, so you need to focus on that as well.

    A response to a question about a hypothetical job search should be along the lines of:

    I would have my assistant post the listing on various sites we use. Most of the time, we receive upwards of 50 applications for any given job post. I obviously don’t have time to interview everyone, but I’ll review the resumes in detail to make sure they have the education and skills we are looking for. I’ll invite a dozen or so applicants for an interview, and see what more they can tell me. Generally, it only takes a couple days to fill a role.

    Even if the interviewer never applies for a job with your company, they will be better equipped to look for jobs in a field he or she is passionate about.
