How Do You Think I Rate As An Interviewer?

During a job interview, the hiring manager may ask you a question like, “How do you think I rate as an interviewer”

While it may seem like the manager is suddenly lacking in self-esteem or is questioning his capabilities, what he’s really doing is using this question to help determine your character. How you answer can give him a good indication of how you would treat others as well, especially in situations where you are in a lower position than they are.

Points to Emphasize

When you answer this question, you’ll want to be gracious and respectful.

  • Always answer positively, as it demonstrates a respect for your superiors.

  • Mention the importance of his position as compared with yours without being self-deprecating.

  • Use this opportunity to let him know you recognize that he’s taking time out from his busy day to meet with you.

  • If you answer with a literal rating system, say something like “ten out of ten” or “eleven out of ten.”

    Your answer to this question can be short and sweet, with the main focus being on positivity and appreciation. You can also use this question as an opportunity to thank him for the interview.

    Mistakes You Should Avoid

    This question is sure to throw you off if you’re not prepared. To give the best answer, avoid these traps:

  • Never criticize the hiring manager’s interviewing skills, even if you view it as constructive criticism.

  • If you answer with a rating, never rate less than the full amount.

  • Don’t ask questions back to the manager, such as asking if he has had much experience with interviews.

    • Don’t use this opportunity to talk yourself up.

    If your answer is anything less than 100% positive, it could be a red flag to the hiring manager.

    Below are two examples of how you can answer a question asking you to evaluate the interview:

    I think you did fine. I’m sure you’ve conducted a lot of interviews, and it’s probably second nature for you now. Thanks for taking the time to meet with me today. I’m sure you have a lot of things you have to juggle every day.

    I’d say you rate at least ten out of ten. The questions you asked seemed spot on. I can tell you guys are working hard to find the perfect applicant for the job. I’m glad I could meet with you.

    The interviewer wants to know how you respond to authority, and this is just one question that can help him determine that.
