Can You Estimate Future Job Openings?

As the manager or owner of a business, you might be asked to conduct what is referred to as an informational interview. This is different than a regular job interview and will contain questions like: “Can you estimate future job openings”

Someone scheduling an informational interview wants to learn more about the industry you are in to decide if that is a path they want to take as well. As such, it makes sense that someone would want to know if there is projected growth in the field you are in. Someone asking this question wants to know if there will be a job for them once they get out of college or once they have gained more experience.

Points to Emphasize

Answering a question about future job prospects can be tricky since anything could happen, but emphasize the following bullet points.

  • Give an honest appraisal about what you know about the future of your field

  • Research before the interview to know where your field is heading

  • Ask the interviewer follow-up questions to determine their passion for this field

    • Recommend the best way to get into this field

Some careers are predicted to increase greatly in the near future while others are not so fortunate. It is important to give the interviewer accurate information so that he or she knows whether or not to enter this field in the first place.

    Mistakes You Should Avoid

When discussing the future of this particular career path, avoid these points.

  • Don’t lie about what direction the industry is heading

  • Don’t feel the need to talk about job openings all over the country

    • Avoid saying, “I don’t know”
  • If you are having to guess, say that you are guessing

If an interviewer is asking this question, there is a good chance he or she is interested in working at your company, so feel free to tell them if you believe there will or will not be openings in the future.

    Sample Answer

You should give an answer based on your particular industry and company, but it should go something like this:

I can tell you right now that we are planning on expanding within this city, and we actually just drew up the blueprints for a new building. Within a few years, we will have a lot of openings for people like you.

The person interviewing you could end up being one of your employees one day, so you want to leave a good impression. Give the best answer you can so that the interviewer knows what kind of opportunities lie ahead.
