Agriculture & Environment

What to Expect in Your Agriculture & Environment Interview

If you are seeking employment in the agricultural and environmental fields, there is a wide range of positions you may be interviewing for, from technical field jobs to supervising a laboratory. For any of these jobs, your interviewer will want to see technical knowledge and skill, excellent communication skills, and the ability to locate problem areas and create solutions.

If you will be spending most of your time out in the fields, in the laboratory or at an office desk, you will need to demonstrate an understanding of the many factors that affect an agricultural or environmental occupation. This may include climate science as well as some branches of chemistry and mathematics. In some positions, you will also need to perform manual labor, such as planting and harvesting.

Tips to Remember

Preparing for an agriculture & environment interview can be challenging. You may feel that many of your important skills are easier to show than to explain verbally. Use this chance to demonstrate your communication skills and impress your interviewer by effectively conveying your qualifications. While getting ready for your interview, be sure to think about the following:

· Prepare several examples of times when your solution to a problem was successfully implemented.

· Research the company and position you are interviewing for and explain why your qualifications meet its needs.

· Be ready to highlight coursework and experience, as well as personal skills that make you a good fit for the position.

Interviewers will want to see appropriate coursework or certifications for the agricultural or environmental position you are applying for. If you are missing any academic steps or you believe that your grades do not reflect your knowledge levels, expect to be questioned about these issues.

General Skills to Highlight

In addition to the specific skills required for the position you are applying for, agriculture and environment interviewers will be looking for skills that are relevant across the board. Here are some abilities worth showcasing at your interview:

  • Attention to Detail – As someone working in a scientific field, you will need to be meticulous in observing and recording all relevant facts.
  • Fluent Communication – Whether you are writing a report, making a presentation or interacting with your team, well-phrased and accurate communication is key.
  • Willingness to Learn – Your employer will want to see that you are committed to keeping up with the latest developments and technologies relevant to your position.

When interviewing for any of the various positions available in the agricultural and environmental fields, be aware that in addition to technical skill, communication and working well with others is also important. Preparing for your interview in advance will help you focus and create a favorable impression.
