You’ve passed the first hurdle. You’ve submitted your resume and you’ve been called for an interview. Your potential employer was impressed with your qualifications and is considering hiring you! You are well on your way to employment
All you need to do now is convince the employer that his instincts were right and that he should go ahead and make that offer. The interview is your opportunity to use your dynamic communications skills to make it happen!
Your new job is within your sights but it won’t really be yours without some preparation. The interview is the step on the road to employment that requires the most preparation, but by following a few simple suggestions that new job will be yours.
1 – Know your stuff.Learn as much as you can about the company – its history, founder, products and employees. The more you learn about the company’s strengths and weaknesses the more you can speak about what an asset your skills and qualifications will be. Be able to call your interviewer, the company president and other important people within the company by name.
2 – Ask questions.Remember that the interview is a two-way street. You should not be afraid to ask your interviewer questions. Asking the right questions lets your employer know that you are informed and inquisitive about the industry. And remember, you are interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you. The interview is your chance to determine if you will be happy working there.
3 – Dress for success.Make sure your attire is neat and tidy and appropriate for the workplace. A rule of thumb is to dress just slightly better than you imagine yourself dressing everyday on the job. Bring a portfolio with paper and pen for taking notes.
4 – Stay calm.Reaffirm for yourself what a competent, capable employee you would make and keep your cool throughout the interview. Remember that they’ve already decided that they’re interested in hiring you. You’re doing something right, so keep on doing it.
5 – Follow-up.After your interview send a follow-up letter restating your interest in the position, your unique qualifications, and something specific that stands out from the interview. Make sure the employer knows that you are still interested in the position and that the interview only confirmed your interest.
Interviewing for a job can be the most satisfying step of the process and can ultimately be the step that determines whether you get the job or whether you keep looking. Prepare for it well and you will be rewarded.
