There are times in your career when you are interested in a position with a company but you feel that your resume reflects entirely too much experience to qualify. This is especially true when you are at an advanced or executive level of your career. Never fear, there are ways to mitigate concerns over having too much experience.
The first step in allaying an employer’s concerns over having too much experience is to adopt an attitude of success and comfort in your current existence. What this means is that you need to let the prospective employer know that you are doing fine financially and really do not need an excessive salary in your new position.
Instead, you need to let them know that you are looking for a good position in a dynamic company where you can get promoted based on your skills and achievements. If you can convey an attitude of excitement about the position and the challenge of advancing in such a great company, the prospective employer will look at you in a different light.
While you should never fabricate information on your resume, you can always generalize and streamline your resume such that your responsibilities match the position you are interested in. When you list your past experience, consider leaving your actual title off of each job and instead list the department you worked for and what your responsibilities were. Simplify your responsibilities enough that they more closely match the job description.
If asked what your position was, downplay it so that the employer does not see you as extremely overqualified. You can explain that you were at a small company that used people for many different tasks and the title was somewhat honorific or you can say that with the company’s financial condition, they could not afford to hire outside the company so they gave you the title without the salary.
In essence, come up with a valid reason why the prospective employer should not consider you overqualified and should consider you a valid candidate for the position.
One of the major traits that employers look for now in new and prospective employees is a sense of excitement. Even if you have more experience than required for the position, you can always convince the employer that you are extremely excited about conquering the challenges of the job.
Hopefully, if you have reached a higher level in your career, you have developed some sales and persuasion skills. In instances where you might be considered overqualified, use your skills to win the interviewer over to your side and convince them that, while you do have a world of experience, this job is perfect for you because it presents just the right challenges.
Also convince them that the company is perfect for you too because you can see yourself progressing through the ranks and eventually attaining one of the higher level positions. Show them that you are a team player and great contributor whether you are sweeping the floors or running the company and that you take pride in your work ethic no matter what position you hold.
