A new independent report by the Lumina Foundation has found that more jobs in the future will require workers to have a college degree on their resume.

According to the “A Stronger Nation Through Higher Education” report from the nonprofit agency, 60% of all jobs in the U.S. will require that applicants have some form of postsecondary education by 2018. The report found that currently, the consequences of not adding postsecondary education on a resume can be increasingly harmful, especially in light of the recent economic downturn.

The report concluded that “America is grappling with the challenge of how to grow jobs, skills and opportunity. The issue can’t be wished away by trendy talk about higher education bubbles and simplistic questions about whether college is still “worth it.” America needs more college graduates.”

A Brookings Institution report found that in 2010 while the U.S. jobless rate was 8%, the rate of unemployment for those without a college degree reached 21%.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that professionals with a postsecondary degree have the potential to earn $1,000 more than those with some or no college education.
